Cedar Lake Ranch Caretaker’s Quarters
A working residence designed to support the daily operation of Cedar Lake Ranch
1610 Sq Ft | 1 Bedroom | 1 Bath

Project Overview
The caretaker’s quarters provides on-site housing for ranch staff. At Cedar Lake Ranch, where daily operations include horses, equipment, and a working property of this scale, having staff housed on site is a practical necessity.
The building is designed to support that function: durable, efficient, and positioned where it’s most useful. It receives the same level of design coordination as the primary structures on the property, because how it sits on the site and how it connects to the ranch’s circulation affects how the whole property works.
Site response
The site slopes, and the building uses that slope rather than fighting it. A stepped section puts the garage and service area at the lower grade with direct drive access, and the living spaces above at a level that looks out over the property.
Retaining walls establish a stable building platform without excessive grading. The placement gives the caretaker clear sightlines to the working areas of the ranch, which is part of why the position was chosen.
Layout and living experience
Living spaces occupy the upper level above the garage: open kitchen, dining, and living area with the bedroom set apart for privacy. At 1,610 square feet the footprint is compact, but the plan is organized so it functions comfortably as a full-time residence.
The separation between the garage and service level below and the living spaces above keeps work functions from bleeding into the residential part of the building.
Structure and buildability
The stepped section means two foundation conditions: a slab-on-grade at the garage level and an elevated framed floor above. Retaining wall loads, floor framing, and the transition between levels were all coordinated in the design phase.
On a sloped site with a split-level program, that coordination has to happen before construction starts The builder needs a clear set of drawings, not a problem to solve in the field.
Outdoor living
Outdoor spaces are simple and functional, providing direct access to the surrounding property. Covered areas offer shade and protection while maintaining a close connection to the landscape.
A covered porch on the upper level extends the living area outside and gives a place to decompress at the end of a working day. The view from that porch looks out over the property, a practical reminder of what the building is there to support.
These spaces are designed for everyday use rather than formal gathering, reinforcing the role of the caretaker’s quarters within the working ranch.
Materials and character
The caretaker’s quarters uses the same stone, wood, and metal roofing as the rest of the Cedar Lake Ranch estate.
Stone anchors the lower portion of the structure to the site, while lighter materials above define the residential spaces. These elements create a cohesive appearance while maintaining a clear distinction between functional and primary structures.
The massing and material weight shift at the transition between the garage level and the living level, which reflects how the building actually works.
Project summary
A caretaker’s quarters is easy to treat as an afterthought on a large estate project. At Cedar Lake Ranch it wasn’t. The building’s placement, its relationship to the slope, its connection to the working areas of the property, were decisions made in the context of the whole estate, not in isolation.
A working ranch depends on the people who run it. The building that houses them deserves the same level of thought as everything else on the property.
